Museums

There are several museums near the CARLTON'S Hotel.

  • MUSÉE DE MONTMARTRE, 12 rue Cortot 75018
Housed in a 17th-century mansion, this museum traces the history of the area and its bohemian eras through various artefacts, drawings and photographs.
  • MUSÉE D'ART NAÏF MAX FOURNY, 2 rue Ronsard 75018
It holds nearly 500 paintings and 80 sculptures by contemporary artists from around the world.
  • MUSÉE EN HERBE, 2 rue Ronsard 75018
It offers only temporary exhibitions intended to introduce children to museum holdings.
  • MUSÉE D'ART JUIF, 42 rue des Saules 75018
Housed since 1948 in the Jewish centre of Montmartre, the museum presents Jewish history and art, particularly through religious artefacts.
  • MUSÉE DE LA VIE ROMANTIQUE, 16 rue Chaptal 75009
Housed in a charming mansion that was owned by the painter Ary Scheffer, this museum displays mementos and objets d'art that recall two important 19th-century figures: Ary Scheffer himself and the author George Sand.
  • MUSÉE DE L'ÉROTISME, 72 bd de Clichy 75018
This museum, which does not focus on a specific period or style, displays all forms of erotic, sacred and profane art. Paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, objets d'art and furniture come together in this journey which leads from Latin America to China.
  • ESPACE TOULOUSE LAUTREC, 11 rue A. Antoine 75018
Permanent exhibition dedicated to the famous painter, considered as "the soul of Montmartre", the Parisian area where he lived. His paints depict the life in the Moulin Rouge and in the other Parisian cabarets. Three of the well known women that he represented were Jane Avril, the singer Yvette Guilbert, and Louise Weber, more known as La Goulue (The Glutton), the eccentric dancer who created the "cancan".
  • ESPACE MONTMARTRE-DALI, 11 rue Poulbot 75018
From the heights of Montmartre, this space offers an original display of Salvador Dali's sculptures, engravings and water colours. Its highly theatrical scenography alternates sound and light in a spirit which reflects that of the artist.
  • MUSÉE GRÉVIN, 10 bd Montmartre 75009
Visitors come to see wax reproductions of famous figures from yesterday and today. The livings are portrayed here as well, as 12 new personalities from French and international current events are sculpted each year.
  • MUSÉE NATIONAL GUSTAVE MOREAU, 14 rue de la Rochefoucauld 75009
Moreau, a painter famous for his allegorical and mythological subjects, was a master of symbolism. He renovated his home to accommodate large workshops at the same time preserving the intimate character of the first floor apartment. The museum was bequeathed to the government along with the artist's collections, in 1902.
